Not everyone understands the conservation benefits of hunting black bears. Groups dedicated to ending hunting include PETA, which has joined up with synthetic furrier Ecopel to produce a faux bear fur. PETA is lobbying the British government to replace the real bear fur used in the Queen’s Guard’s caps.
PETA reports that, in 2020, bearskin caps cost £1,305 each. The UK govenment spent more than £1 million on bearskin caps caps between 2014 and 2020.
Under the #MoDGoFurFree hashtag, PETA claims support for its campaign from actors and entertainers including Sir Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson and, from beyond the grave, the late Sir Roger Moore.
